Violence Camouflage My work lies within an interest of the mediated images of weaponry and military display specifically from the newspaper format. My work considers the formal presentation of such and what effect and impact the media society has on the public’s experience of the world. Selected imagery undergoes a process of manipulation through its own repetition and is re-presented in camouflaged decoration. I am trying to reflect on the one hand the numbness that I experience through the bombardment of these images in the news media, and on the other, play with its aesthetic potential in the abstracted format of the image. Through the process of turning violent imagery into pattern, I am researching how repetition can be a way of deferring the real at the same time as referring to it, neutralizing and revealing horror through repetition. Repetition I am interested in the transformative power of repetition, of how, for example, the image of an armed soldier shifts from a representation of the weapon used to assert power into ornamentation through repetition. However, violence is not made invisible through repetition in my work, it is rather disguised. In one sense repetition in my work does not reproduce the image but camouflages that which is understood as a threat, and yet it is through the decorative field that the horrific implications expose themselves as the individual elements again become apparent. This ‘re-focusing’ back to the image, this coming into consciousness, located in the perception of the viewer, is where the real violence reveals itself, the moment where one is simultaneously in/out of ‘touch’ with the subject. Not only is there a process of camouflaging violence but there is also a production of violence camouflaged within this. My re-working of imagery into camouflaged decoration requires a mass of repeated actions from me, especially the first installation of Ivy at Tent, where I cut and assembled individually a large number of individual paper soldiers by hand. I am quite an obsessive worker and enjoy unashamedly the repeated actions that my work dictates. I work with a mass of imagery, manipulating it through repetition into decorative pattern. Through this process I have tried to push, and test, the images to their transformative limits, to try and touch this limit even, and developing further towards a re-working of these images onto objects within specific environments. Installation It is through the opportunity of interaction with given spaces and environments, that my work has found it’s own space to develop itself within. From this point of working, my work became site specific, responding to architectural elements and environments.
