The Apparatus of Memory
My work consists of installations that make heavy use of photography, audio and video recordings, often historical in context. My work researches the way we use our personal and cultural archives for remembering and creating our lives.
Photographs are ambivalent carriers of information. What they display and what they mean can be two very different things.
Stories —be they photographs or oral tradition— are intrinsically incomplete and ambivalent. They can not deliver clear facts, they only provide a specific space for interpretation.
When using photos as evidence, one has to research aspects that are not part of its visual content. When, where, and by whom was the picture taken? Which third parties have participated in its creation, or are personally invested in it? But even questions such as these will yield vague and ambivalent answers.
Our memory is similarly vague. What we remember, and how, can be externally influenced. Memories need a trigger to show themselves. Photos are suited exceptionally well for this purpose.
How our memories are connected to images is often coincidental, and it can change over time. Photos as factual evidence is what historians consider quite silly. They are often only usable as an example or illustration. They might be used as a symbol, but almost never as a direct proof.
My work is about my family's history. This history goes from here back to my grandparents' parents. I'm especially interested in how information is transmitted, and how I absorb it. Besides the family history, I'm interested in the connection to collective memory. In line of this research, I've visited many places that have something to do with this. City archives, monuments; locations that often show no pointers to their history.
My archive consists of audio and video recordings (mostly of conversations), documentary photos (taken during my several journeys), a collection of private photo albums, as well as historical books and photo books. The addition of objects or images happens on a purely intuitive level. The archive allows me to connect subjects with one another that would have never been connected otherwise.
