- Hotel Modern - world tour
Central to my work is my contemplative attitude towards sculpture, presentation, image, representation, abstraction, meaning and value. In my installations, the boundaries between sculptural elements and means of display are tested and readymade objects sometimes place the works on the intersection of artefact and entourage. My work therefor challenges the lines between the autonomous, the functional and the decorative.
I use photography to also reflect on the working process in the studio. Photographing moments in which images actually arise out of all the actions that take place, as well as accidental situations that occur while working helps me visualise the question what abstraction and image really are and, more specifically, when we come to name images as images. The questioning of these traditional understandings and the challenging of their outlines represents my desire to not only look at these fundamentals of sculpture and images less statically, but also look anew at what seems self-evident in our surrounding world, and look afresh at how we come to value things there.
My interests also go out to the longing for change that is individual and collective at once, and to the ways in which this longing is sometimes visually expressed. In the use of signs and symbols to express fundamental and emotionally charged matter I see the distinction between abstraction and representation dissolve. And in the use of activist language I see a way to break through the irrevocability of the ways in which our surrounding world is supposedly shaped, and an opportunity to start seeing things differently.
