- Veertig Rotterdamse kunstenaars vieren feest
Rabin Huissen (Rotterdam, NL) is a conceptual artist whose works document his relationship to and journeys in the urban realm through ink drawings, paper cut-out collages, polaroid photography, and installation. In various ways, he investigates his presence while being present in time and place, by capturing fleeting moments in the here and now, as well as the past. Mostly sketching while traveling and being in movement, he later revives and re-enacts these experiences, mere moments after they lost their topicality.
His main body of work, a series of paper cut-out collages, literally carves out the path he ventured on: paper and cardboard are cut and assembled in such a way to capture and recount his every move, while he uses polaroid on the other hand as a medium to document, blur, soften, and even replace the original imagery. As part of Traveling Works, Huissen has been working on a series of notes and notations he sends to his studio while traveling abroad. While some consist of predesigned archival forms to notate and record his experiences, other formats document and record their own journey. By placing an emulsion behind the see-through film of an envelope, the works are 'made' while they travel, and slowly change color, gather marks and traces along the way.
Over the years, Huissen has developed a distinct, handmade signature that unifies his working methods, with each work being a precise recording of a unique environment, realm, and experience. He has been included in various group shows, among other at the Showroom Institute Néerlandais, and the Custodia Foundation in Paris, France, and the 4th Bangkok Triennale International Print and Drawing Exhibition in Thailand. This year he will be featured in solo shows at Contemporary Showroom, and Phoebus, Het Plafond in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
